1. On page 5, in the Apostles' Creed, instead of

    "descendit ad inferos",
    it should be
    "descendit ad infernos", with the
    pronunciation,
    "day-SHEN-deet ahd een-FAYR-nohs"

A similar change should be made on page 66

  2. Deacon’s Prayers

I received a request from a newly ordained deacon for the pronunciation of the following prayers which were not within the scope of the original book.

  3. A friend of mine, a Pentecostal minister, recently said to me,
Protestants should stop attacking our Catholic brothers and sisters and Catholics should affirm the faith of Protestants. In other words, Protestants say mean things to Catholics about some things they do not understand and Catholics deny Protestants are in the fold.
    He's absolutely right.

Now, don't get me wrong.  There are portions of Protestant teaching which we, as Catholic, know to be error.  And a Protestant would say the same about some things in the Catholic.  If that weren't the case, we wouldn't be divided. I have no intention of minimizing those differences. Neither in this piece would it be fruitful to debate who is "correct".

What does the Church teach us about non-Catholics?
"The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but do not profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter." Those "who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church." With the Orthodox Churches, this communion is so profound "that it lacks little to attain the fullness that would permit a common celebration of the Lord's Eucharist." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #838)
Yes, the Protestant has an imperfect communion with the Catholic Church.  That can be approached in two ways

    • Some Protestants might react with "I'm not in communion with the Catholic Church?  How dare they suggest that?"  Might I suggest that those who want full communion with the Catholic Church should consider becoming Catholic?
    • Others will see the intent of the statement and conclude that the Catholic Church affirms that they are Christian but simultaneously recognizes that there profound differences in belief.

And don't forget the words of our Lord:
John answered, “Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you.” Luke 9:49-50
The Protestant is your brother, my friend.  He is family.  Christ loves him and accepts him as a Christian!  Can you do any less?
And, do you have the authority to judge him for doctrinal shortcomings?  Not unless you're God. Christ, and Christ alone, is the judge.

Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! Ps 133:1

  4. When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And he stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.  And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to any one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to the people.” (Matt 8:1-4)

What a beautiful picture of our Lord’s mercy. For, my brothers and sisters, leprosy is representative of serious sin, or Mortal Sin.  And this healing we see here is nothing less than a shadow (cf Heb 10:1) of what happens when we confess our sins to Christ in the presence of a priest (or, as some put it, confess our sins to a priest).

Jesus speaks of the commands of Moses, which are found in Leviticus 14.
    • The first step in the process of the leper being healed is the actual healing. In the same way, the first step in our healing from sin is the actual healing – which is to say, our repentance.
    • The second step is examination by the priest.  In the case of leprosy, it involved physical examination.  In the case of sin, the priest will hear the confess, determine if it’s sincere. In other words, he examines the soul.
    • Once the priest is sure of the healing (which, in the case of sin, is evidenced by the absolution), there is still a step necessary before being accepted back into the community; an offering must be made.  Such is what a penance truly is.

Some may question, though, where this authority to forgive sins is given to the priest.  Jesus gave it, on the Sunday, a week after His resurrection.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.  (John 20:22-23)

So, my friend, let me ask you.  Do you have serious sin, a Mortal Sin, which weighs down your soul? Why not be cleansed of it?

Jesus is waiting, ready, and willing.

  5. You want to stop abortion?
You want to stop government corruption - on both sides of the aisle?
If you call yourself a Christian, there's one way, and ONLY one way that you can work towards it. And, believe it or not, it will not be accomplished by you advocating for one candidate or another.
Start living as a faithful Christian - in whatever tradition you find yourself. God honors faithfulness.
If you're a Baptist, be the best Baptist you can be.
If you're a Pentecostal, be the best Pentecostal you can be.
If your Orthodox, be the best Orthodox you can be.
And, if you're Catholic, be the best Catholic you can be.
In being the best Catholic you can be, read, learn, and FULLY EMBRACE the Church's teaching on every subject.
You support abortion, that's your choice. But stop fooling yourself. If you accept abortion, you are in direct rebellion against the Church's teaching.
You support any sexual activity outside heterosexual monogamy as being ok or 'normal'? That's your choice. But stop fooling yourself. If you accept the normalcy of this, you are in direct rebellion against the Church's teaching.
Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church - and read the Scripture references in the footnotes.
Read the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.
Stop PLAYING at being Catholic. BE Catholic.
Stop PLAYING at being Pentecostal. BE Pentecostal.
    etc.
BUT - if you have someone in your life whose life style and actions don't measure up with what, as a Christian, you know to be God's perfect will, does that mean you reject them, that you condemn them? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Christ loved us when we were lost in sin. Can we do anything else? And He met us where we were, and by His love, wooed us to the truth.

  6. Let me start off by reading from Psalm 127
“Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.”
    Obviously, King David knew Verle.

But, Verle was blessed in many other ways. He had two wives that loved him. He was married to his first wife, Emily, a wonderful woman, for 35 years. And, for the last 30 years, he was married to my mom.

He was solidly employed for decades. How many people can make such a claim today?

And, he was blessed to love the Lord and serve him.

But, more than being blessed, Verle Soule was a good man.
He was a good man because he was a man of honor, of virtue.
As both Debby and Doug have told us, he worked two jobs for decades. He worked those jobs in order to support his large family of eleven children. He had a duty to them, and he gladly fulfilled it.
And he was a good man because he was a blessing to others.

When my own dad was in his final illness, he hated the food at the nursing home. When Mom and Verle were in town, 4 or 5 days a week, Verle would go to Hoffman’s to buy dad a hotdog, the only thing he still really enjoyed eating. People would ask him, “How can you be so good to Louie after he treated Wanda so terribly?” Verle would reply, “I have nothing against him. He freed up Wanda for me”.
And then, there was the Blizzard of ’66. Now, for those of you too young to remember it, think of the storm we had this past weekend and multiply it by 10. The drifts were so high that we were able to slide out the roof on the second floor of the house.

In the aftermath of the storm, Verle attached a toboggan to his snowmobile, went down to Loblaws, and bought staples – milk, bread, eggs – for the neighborhood. He blessed his neighbor.
But, the greatest blessing he gave was loving me and allowing me to love him, to be his stepson.

  8. This is taken word for word, omitting only the VERY graphic picture, from https://www.endalldisease.com/satan-at-work-aborted-fetuses-used-in-food-beauty-products-and-vaccines/

One of the most disturbing satanic practices in our culture is the use of aborted fetal cells in the processed foods that millions of people consume.  Yes, millions of people are eating dead babies everyday.

A biotechnology company out of California called Senomyx specializes in the development of food flavorings using aborted embryonic cells for the production of food chemicals.  Research by Senomyx into the use of “HEK-293″ aborted human fetal cells as a flavor enhancer, was published in pubmed in 2002, after which several patents were filed by them.  Additionally, this company has partnered with numerous major processed food manufacturers including Kraft, PepsiCo, and Nestle.
Oklahoma Senator Ralph Shortey has introduced legislation in early 2012 to prohibit the normalization of widespread cannibalism, yet it still continues to this day.  The only way to truly stop it is to stop supporting the companies that are making human beings eat their own dead babies.  Can anybody say Soylent Green?
Debi Vinnedge, of the pro-life group Children of God for Life:
“What they don’t tell the public is that they are using HEK 293 — human embryonic kidney cells taken from an electively aborted baby to produce those receptors. They could have easily chosen animal, insect, or other morally obtained human cells expressing the G protein for taste receptors.”
The exact same flavor enhancing chemicals could just as easily be produced using animal or insect cells, yet they choose to use cells from aborted babies.

Boycotting Cannibalism: Foods Containing Dead Fetal Cells

Every time we eat any of the food sources listed below (and any time we eat the flesh and blood of another sentient being), we are participating in a satanic ritual.  It’s time to say ‘no’ by never purchasing products made with dead babies again.  The following products are manufactured using aborted fetal cells:

  9. One of the US Presidential candidates is running on the platform of "Make America Great Again".

The man is a serial adulterer, has joked about incest.  His business dealings have impoverished others.
I won't go on, because the post is not about him, it's about making America great again.  And, he has no idea what it will take.

    What WILL it take?

Virtue, plain and simple.  Yes, it would be nice if everybody in the nation were faithful Christians.  But, short of that, why not hope, even expect, that people be virtuous?

    It can be done.

And we should proclaim that truth

America's Greatness comes from Virtue. Bring it back.

  10. America,

    Repent.

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Historically, every nation that killed it children was conquered and decimated by one that did not.
    We're heading that way now.
